Get Your Plan Right Upfront

 

Other than hiring a good electrical contractor at a good price, there’s not all that much for you to worry about regarding electrical.

 

I recommend that electrical rough-in (post-framing) be done third, behind plumbing and HVAC.

Consult with your electrician and HVAC contractor to verify.

Your main concern with electrical comes primarily in the planning and design phase.

Your house plan will have a page devoted to electrical.

Review it carefully before letting your electrical contractor start.

 

The plan designer will design electrical to meet building code with all the standard outlets for electricity, phone, and cable.

But are there as many as you want?  Are they in the right locations?  Are there enough lighting fixtures?  Are they in the right locations?

The design stage is the time to answer these questions and plan for extras like home theatre, surround sound, security system, perimeter lighting, or anything beyond the basics.


Structured Wiring

Many consider structured wiring a must for the modern home in the age of internet and digital.

Structured wiring combines phone, video, audio, remotes, security, data, voice, satellite, or anything you want into a single, integrated home network.

Advantages of structured wiring:

● All cables run to a central panel  ● Ease of troubleshooting  ● All lines and cables are dedicated, giving more consistent quality of signal 

● Multiple users easily share a single internet source. 

Get a proposal from a media specialty company for a structured wiring system.  They may offer a better deal than your electrical contractor.
